For those who don't already know, this is what I've been wasting my time with the last week or so. And I'm selling it on Etsy to pay for two more to customize again for myself.

Let's see if art sells.

You know I love you man but I really think there are some aspects of this monitor's execution that are detract from it's total value as a well executed art piece.

For one example, the upper corner brass pieces. The open nail holes definitely underline the "pieces from the hardware store" nature of this mod. Almost anything you did to avoid such an appearance would definitely help the presentation of a finished product.

There's more if you'd like to hear it.

It's not a bad start but I don't think it's salable as it stands from a simple design standpoint.

I think a friend would tell you this, so I am.

you can't put the screws in becuase it will damage the monitor. I thought of cutting them and then gluing in do you'd see the heads only, but didn't think it was worth it.

you're the only one so far to even noticed, but i would like to hear the rest.

Not really surprising from a guy who carries a real black powder gun as his costume prop (which he still hasn't let me fire)

Nail holes -- Fixable. I was also thinking you could glue screw heads on.

        What else Sas?

          Muthah F*cker!

I answered this last night and even checked to make sure it displayed and NOW it's not here anymore.

          Sigh.

I'll download the big picture and get it all together again tonight.

It was a good piece with helpful sources and all.

          Grrrr.

First, your steampunk Monitor v1.0 is a very good first attempt but I think it can easily be made better in version v2.0 : ).

            1. The clasps (top and bottom center) are in current common use and having no apparent function beyond decoration are kind of a non steampunk feature. You have to use uncommon hardware so if it's used as decoration it appears to be a decoration and not a leftover clasp.

            2. The brass corner pieces with open nail holes are also a recognizable hardware piece in wide common usage and for that reason alone are not right for a steampunk piece. The appearance of this particular piece would definitely be improved by gluing a couple of brass screw heads over the holes though and you should do that thing.

The v2.0 monitor though, that'll need a source for a wide variety of brass and copper fittings and I think I have just the place. IF San Diego Hardware in it's present location off the 15 in north Clairemont is as it was downtown for something like 80 years they have a huge selection of the things. I believe that were Vitaly to go there and poke through the hardware drawers he'd come away inspired.

            3. The brackets that hold the frame are way too spindly and not decorative enough for the steampunk aesthetic. Again, I imagine SD Hardware will offer some alternatives.

            4. The paint. Not a good color. Not very metallic in appearance. We used to use this epoxy based spray paint to paint our Dream Police helmets. We'd get it at high performance autoparts stores. They had chrome, copper, brass and black. The copper and brass looked real and the shine was terrific. I think the modern equivelent would be better than what you used on v1.0.

Call me when you go to SD Hardware. I'd like to go.

actually I wanted to design a monitor that w s easily reproducible unlike all the other ones you see online which use unique parts or a lot of fabrication.

But i like the idea of checking out SD Hardware. Was actually just there a couple weeks ag (at the new location) becuase so dork at Home Depot told that would be a good place to go for hard-to fund screws. Turns out they don't even sell screws anymore, period. Now it's only decorative hardware. I mentally noted that but didn't look around o associate it w/ steampunk.
              Maybe.
Anyway, most people aren't as sophisticated and observant as you and ar eimpressed enought.
o make something really unique, I'd have to sell it for more.

Dang. No screws at SD hardware anymore? They just sell decoritive hardware only?

Bummed I am. They were like the perfect hardware store when they were downtown, selling a little bit of everything with at least a spot in a drawer with every hardware fitting in common usage in the last century.

I even bought "horsehide glue" there when I was making this enormous skull for the Haunted Museum at the Museum of Man in Balboa Park. They had everything. But the rising rents drove them out of downtown and they've been forced to adapt to a narrower range of tastes, I guess.

If they still do the fittings, I'd say it'd still be worth the trip.

I have a feeling it'll be mostly big stuff for houses.

I think antique and thrift stores are better bets.
                  or online.

Do you know an automotive paint supply place that would have the paints you talk about? Preferable around downtown or national City?

I only know Tri-City (or something like that) on Miramar and that was so many years ago, who knows if they are still there.

Let me knwo what you find.

Meanwhile looks like tit is salable after all.
I have a valid bid on it on Ebay.
There is no reserve, so even if no one else bids, it is sold for the $399 + $30 s/h. And it's a buyer with 100% sold feedback of paying for his items.

But there are also 11 watchers right now and 2 days to go. so it's looking even better.

                        Excellent : ).

I guess I was thinking about a different level of fabrication.

                          I think so.
I made the dumb mistake of listing it at 12:30 after midnight on a Saturday night, which means that's also when it ended, while everyone waiting to bid at last moment was out or asleep. So in the end it only went for the $400.

I thought of taking it down and re-listing when I realized, but figured "what the heck".

I'm actually playing w/ the idea of finding a good source for monitors ad just continuing making these.
The hardest part is the deign, searching, and experimenting. After that, making more is a snap.
