The "little woman" wants something more dust resistant than a tent or carport, so it looks like we're going to take the plunge into travel trailer ownership land.
1. Anyone know of any reasonably used ones for sale?
2. Those of you with 'em already, do you have recommendations for good/reasonable mechanics in the area? We've seen a few on craigslist that are need a little work.
A frosty one on the playa for anyone who helps :-)

Re: Travel Trailer help
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 10:48 PMFirst off, don't limit your search to just Craigslist & Tribe. Hit eBay and the local papers too. I found an older one on eBay that was pretty reasonably priced, owned by an older couple who maintained it well. Of course all it took was for two years at BRC and now it looks like it's been through a duststorm (never leave your door, vents, and windows open when away from camp).
If you have a slightly larger budget then consider getting a "toy hauler" as they are way more utilitarian. I'm thinking seriously of selling my travel trailer and getting one myself to haul my trike, surrey, bikes, and camp infrastructure.
Just be cognicent of the weight of the trailer or toy hauler. The newer ones are lighter than older ones of similar length and features. Base the size and wieght on what you will use to tow it. I've been using my Jeep Cherokee with a V8 to tow mine up to this point, but just bought a used one-ton diesel flatbed on the offhand chance that an upgrade to a toy hauler happens this year.

Re: Travel Trailer help
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:08 AMHere's what I recommend... There are a number of trailer rental companies in SD, look around ask a ton of questions. What are you towing it with is the big question? You'll have limits on weight, tranny, cooling and braking systems... You'll find all this out as you go through the process.
Then when you think you've narrowed it down rent something for the weekend. Driving a trailer around town loaded or unloaded, on steep grades around corners into gas stations gives you a better idea of what you're getting into. Other points, brake system, storing it, adding extra gear like a 10X10 canopy, generator, sound system, outside shower, bbq, lounge stuff etc etc., it all adds weight!!!!! But when you get it right, it's all fun.... See you on the dance floor... -

Sat, May 17, 2008 - 2:50 PMthere's a shitload of cheap used RV trailers on eBay Motors.
just be sure to do "advanced Search" and specify only auctions within the distance you;re willing to actually drive to pick it up.
I'd have already gotten one if i had where to park it. -
