We're now B- 4 months or so. If you haven't started already it's time
to start digging out the costumes, checking if your brain will
function in non-default-world-mode, ordering LEDs from Hong Kong and
glowsticks from (wherever they make glowsticks?) and building up your
alcohol tolerance.
I propose a community project night, where we get together and discuss
the projects we're working on, recruit new suckers, er, volunteers,
promote what we want to promote, answer newbie questions, debate rebar
and motorhomes, and so forth; and generally get to know each other!
A few years ago we got together at the Boll Weevil in Miramar; this
worked out pretty well (though several of us have spent years in
recovery, but that's another story!). It would be on a weeknight in a
week or two, probably around 7 or whenever you wanted to show up.
They have a bunch of open tables, pitchers of beer, non-vegan-friendly
hamburgers and things (maybe they can stock up on celery sticks in
advance?). The place and the attire is family-friendly but there's no
guarantee the conversation will be.
Newbies welcome! Old-timers welcome! Dusty blinky clothes are
welcome! (Discussion of subjects which should not be mentioned - not
welcome!)
Any thoughts? Good/bad nights?

Re: Project Night
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 6:12 PMUm, this might put you in a catch-22, but what subjects shouldn't we mention? Just need to know, so that they don't accidentally get mentioned.

Re: Project Night
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 6:30 PMIf MP is gonna be there....well you know I wouldn't miss it. Sounds deliciously old school to me. And I'll be offering up the poi/hoop making workshops for the spinner in you. Thanks Fred!

Re: Project Night
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 8:16 PMSasquatch mentioned to me the other day that he thought the Virgin Orientation thing that we did last year was a good thing to try again.
Do you want to include that sort of aspect to this?

Re: Project Night
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 9:18 PMYay....I'm in!!! Let's recruit a few rangers as well!!! -

Re: Project Night
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 9:58 PM> what subjects shouldn't we mention?
First rule of Fight Club is that we do not talk about Fight Club! :)
Actually, this is a great idea! For the past few weeks I've been charging forward on my project - a human powered flying saucer with multi-channel lighting controller, and I would love the opportunity to talk to someone about working with wire, wire mesh, and/or metal because that's the area in which I need the most help.
BTW you can read about my project here: www.oceanbeach.com/ches/tra...ndex.html

Re: Project Night
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 7:51 AMYes! (and yes to the ranger recruitment, below!)
But this would be a more casual get-together. I was planning to invite some non-group burner tech friends as well. -

Re: Project Night
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 9:28 AMSounds fun. I might just have to dust off my poi.

Re: Project Night
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 12:00 PMHey Fred,
Do you mind if I put this out to the Announce List?
You might pick up another 2 to 5 people but I doubt if you get more than that.
What do you think?

Re: Project Night
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 10:03 AMGreat!
Let's pick a date. This week? Wednesday?
I haven't called the Weevil yet to see what nights they're less busy (y'all would be welcome to propose an alternative venue...) -

Re: Project Night
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 1:04 PMWe have an announce list running on the Burningman.com servers
sandiego-announce-subscribe@burningman.com This is an announce only lists and you should really be subscribed to it at the very least, if you have something that you want posted to that list, send me a message with the exact text of what you want posted and I will add it to the other post and send it all out together with a months worth of announcements.
This list has a high population of people who do not subscribe to the SDBM Yahoo group or the SDBurners tribe, but still want to get information about what we are up to locally.
We put announcements out to it periodically, but I am trying to revive it.

Good thing I checked this list.... I check it less and less..
Am I bored with what is posted here? did I just type that?
Workshops? I love, I guess should be more proactive and start some of my own.
So Whirly girl? you can teach me how to poi so I stop slapping myself in the head with them darn balls? giggle!
So tomorrow? the 30th of April?
After that I can't go until Wednesday the 21 of May.... going on a road trip with Mom and Dad.
or if it on the 28th then I could bring Mom and Dad the virgins! I am sure they would get a kick out of US.

Re: Project Night
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:44 PMI was hoping to hear whether we were moving forward with this thing. I don't want to step on any toes but Frederick hasn't responded yet. Should we just say yeah, it's on, and show up at the Boll Weevil on Miramar? What time? 6:00? 6:30?

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 5:43 AMi would like to go to project night. this will be my first time going to burningman. seeming more and more like an epic adventure the more i learn.

Re: Project Night
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 9:21 AMAll,
The Weevil is only open till 8PM, so I'm seeking another venue. Centrally located, burner friendly, open till 10, space for 10-20 (?) of us. Ideas welcome. Or just book it and let us know. -
-
Re: Project Night
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 10:56 AMIf you'd like to do it on Wednesday the 14th, we could do it at AutoHaven, potluck style. -
-
Re: Project Night
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 11:16 AMUmm, I guess I should post more info for those that might care.
AutoHaven is:
Off of I-5, very close to I-8
has a decent sound system so we can have good music
has a video projector, people can bring digitized photo albums and we can slide-show them
has no need to be 'family friendly'
is open as late as we want (with reason, I have to work the next day)
large (could fit 40-50 if we had to)
AutoHaven isn't:
heated (if it's a chilly night, bring a jacket)
furnished (I have 6-7 chairs, bring seating)
spotlessly clean (don't wear something white that you love and is expensive) -
-
Re: Project Night
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 12:00 PMMark...that is an awesome idea!!! I'm up for potluck at AutoHaven on the 14th!!!
Please.....Fred.....Just....think about it. -
-
-
Re: Project Night
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 2:29 PMMy only suggestion is to not bring seating unless you have some ailment that makes you need to sit. Sitting inhibits interaction - I think 6-7 chairs is plenty. -
-
Re: Project Night
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 4:12 PMGee,
Mark what do you think about putting that out to the Announce list?
I would expect to pick up a couple of dozen other people.
I will leave it up to you. It sounds like the newbies are out in force again this year, (which is great, but we have to consider it when planning attendance at things like this.)
-
-
Re: Project Night
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 8:14 PMNo problem with that Gadget. If it turns out to be standing room only, so be it, at least we'll all get comfortable with each other, plus we'll be warm!
A question to everyone, Fred's intent initially seemed to be about projects, which i think is a great idea. I think getting information out to virgins is also a good theme to include, but we're likely to pick up more newbies as we get closer to the event so a second, more intense version this summer would I think be in order.
BTW, it's a Wednesday night so this isn't going to be a party per se, but y'all keep tuned here 'cuz there are definitely going to be some serious parties and art project nights happening at Autohaven over the next four months! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Project Night
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:15 AMSadly I willnot be able to attend. But I want to know every thing there is to know about projects. I love work shops!

Re: Project Night
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 7:40 AMSo I guess I should make an announcement and put up a calendar event in both places (here and y!). And I will, tonight, unless someone beats me to it.
I should probably also chat with Mark about logistics, I suppose? -
-
Re: Project Night
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 7:51 AMI already sent the Announce list Email out.
-
-
Re: Project Night
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 10:25 AM
Could someone summarize the info for those of us not on the announce list?
I am going to be bringing some tubs of fabric that are in search of a good home.
Thanks!

Re: Project Night
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 3:16 PMI know I am technically hosting and all, but I've never been to, or hosted, a newbie/project planning night before, so I am hoping someone else (Fred? Gadget?) has a good idea of what we hope to accomplish and therefore has a good game plan. If not, I'll wing it!
Bins of fabric are welcome!
As is everyone! -

Project Night
Wednesday, May 14
7PM till "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here"
Autohaven
1434 Morena Blvd
San Diego, CA 92110
-----
(If you're asking yourself - "What is this Burning Man thing I keep hearing so much about?", or "Where are all the San Diego burners?", or "What can I do to kill a meaningless Wednesday evening as I race on another day closer to death?" - read on!)
We're now Burn minus 3 months or so (eep!). If you haven't started already it's time to start digging out the costumes, checking if your brain will function in non-default-world-mode, ordering LEDs from Hong Kong and glowsticks from (wherever they make glowsticks?) and building up your alcohol tolerance.
Please join us (and invite your wanna-burner and oughta-burner friends) for a community project night, where we get together and discuss the projects we're working on, recruit new suckers, er, volunteers, promote what we want to promote, answer newbie questions, debate rebar and motorhomes, and so forth; and generally get to know each other!
The particulars, in no particular order:
The evening's agenda will remain well-hidden.
This will be a potluck supper, so make it, bring it, share it.
If you're not sure if you're going to Burning Man this year - by the end of the evening maybe you will be. If you're planning to go to Burning Man for a day or two just to drink beer and try to get laid, maybe by the end of the evening you'll be so disgusted by all the hippie freaks that you'll take your beer bong buddies somewhere else for vacation - I suggest South Padre Island, I hear it's nice in August.
If you're doing a project - be ready to talk about it! If you're doing a theme camp and you need fresh meat/roadies/equipment rental financing/willing and able participants/someone else to blame, be ready to pimp your camp. If you're doing a theme camp that's all full up with people you know and trust and there just isn't room for anyone else, get over yourself and snag some freshies, it'll brighten up the place and get rid of some of the old stench.
If you aren't doing a project or you don't know who you're camping with, this would be a first opportunity to meet people who might someday grudgingly accept you despite your many flaws.
This ain't no party (nor is it a disco, tho it may well be fooling around). It's a Wednesday night - a school night, and I want you kids home and in bed at a reasonable hour or there will be hell to pay.
Newbies welcome! Old-timers welcome! Dusty blinky clothes are welcome! Undercover law enforcement - not so welcome, but what can you do? Give 'em a creepy hug, that's what you can do.
Children are...someone else's problem. Expect adults acting childishly.
There may be strange strangers in attendance, and there will certainly be strange regulars (or regular strangers). Use caution when approaching Rangers and/or circus performers. Your mileage will most certainly vary, often by an order of magnitude.
Bring:
-food to share.
-chairs if you feel like you need them.
-buckets of costumes to get rid of.
-blinky stuff
-an open mind.
-A computer-driven laser cutter/engraver, I need to borrow it for a few months.
-A large trebuchet. I'm sure we can find something to fling.
If you're going to drop of your car for Mark to work on, I'm sure you should check with him first.
If you have questions, complaints or concerns, write them on the back of a $50 bill and send them to:
