Hi Everybody -

I took notes from the Town Hall meeting held yesterday evening at Brutus & Jingles'. The entire meeting was focused on kick starting the decom planning process and resulted in the nomination, acceptance and designation of leads for the various functions necessary to produce our event. I'll be cross-posting this note on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sdburningman/

My personal statement about this:

Just cause there are leads named doesn't mean it's their event. It's an event that belongs to the entire San Diego Burning Man community and to anyone who attends it. The people who choose to accept the lead roles are doing so because they feel dedicated to making the event happen, but it's the artists and performers and crazies among us who show up that make it worthwhile.

SO: The first decom planning meeting will be held Wednesday July 16 at Paul "Sparky" Broadway's house:
2975 Montclair St
San Diego CA 92104

This meeting is for any and all interested in making this year's event something amazing. I'm guessing that the meeting will also result in selecting the event's date and perhaps a theme and/or a name. So if you're interested in influencing that discussion, please show up. I will add the meeting as a calendar item in the group as well.

FYI, the leads for the event's various functions are listed below. Each one of them needs some help and anyone attending the meeting is risking being asked to join in -

The rest of the meeting notes are saved in the files section of the Yahoo group.

Overall leads: Sparky & Hisham
Website maintenance: Dennis Bolling (Alchemist)
Fire Safety Officer: Bad Dawg (Hisham mentioned Dexter as second)
City Planner: Dag
Volunteer Coordinator: Greg (Smoke Blower)
Greeters: Matty Lust (agreed by phone)
Communications Officer: Vicki (Vixen)
Rangers: Sasquatch (agreed by phone)
Sound Manager: Barbara (Luscious)
Ticket Manager: Auriel nominated but not available at meeting to confirm

My dream for BM this year is to have as many of my friends nearby as possible, and to network with more local peeps! I've heard some of the regional camps may not be setting up a big camp this year, so I'd like to invite people to come camp with us, or set up sub-camps around our camp and get friendly! I've been talking with Big D about potentially having the Realm camping with us, I wanna know who else wants to play with us?!

Some details...
Our camp was originally designed to support our art installation (last year it was the inner mind, this year it's Harmony) - so the camp itself is not set up to offer big parties, bars, etc. to the masses... just our art and our cozy camp (of around 150 people, although we only have about 40 confirmed thus far). We'll have all the RVs circled up around a 100' parachute (shade for the tents) and get friendly - last year was so much fun we're doing it again. Your camp duez will buy you a central power grid, shade, greywater disposal and a shower stall (BYO water and solar shower please). Nothing fancy, not a lot of work, and affordable ($40 per person for tenters, $100 (plus $20/person in the RV past the driver) if you are an RV running an a/c unit on our central power grid). The up-side of central power - no RV stank and noise by the tents - we put our generator on the outer edge exhausting to the street! also more efficient use of diesel fuel and you don't have to worry about burning through all your fuel to keep cool. yay!!!

Generally we look for a location around 3:30 and a few blocks back - last year we were at 4 & Grasslands... we're hoping to be a little closer to the esplanade this year and still secure at least half a city block... the good news is that the guy in charge of camp placement is camping with us, so I'm thinking we'll have a good location this year :):)

I'm also interested in talking to people who don't necessarily want to camp with us, but want to have their own camps next door, etc. - be near their friends and take advantage of our secured location and landmarks (we'll have a tall truss in the center of our camp with a huge beamer light on top to make it easy to locate at night). What do you want to create?

Please feel free to contact me here or e-mail dbibeau99 at gmail.com if you wanna chat BM camps :)

To: The Board and greater Burner community From: Hisham
Mission Statement For Decom 2008 Dear Burners I’m flattered to make the short list of people you believe could assume the position of Chief Coordinator. It is an honor to be mentioned with the other nominees and I believe any one from this list will make a great lead. I will keep this short and explain why I believe I could be a good Chief Coordinator. As many of you know this position is only a central point that both supports decom and coordinates. It will involve a voluntary workforce and need to deal with shifting priorities in a timely and constructive way. I hope that my experience with decom 2007 will attest to my hard work and coordination with people. Decom should be open to all possibilities, and never use words like “we should not have”, and “we can’t”. There are technical issues of fire, sound and property that must always be addressed, but my goal is to insulate the greater community from this aspect and support and push decom in a creative way.
Theme:
“Reports of New life on Mars.”
A outer world approach to Decom. “Create and explore a new world. Mission trips will leave for the red
planet to setup a society known as Decom. We will set up an 80ft center camp (currently more than half
built). This will serve as the hub to explore a new world and meet new life forms. Sparkys will host
center camp and the chicken Shack will help with food. Eon will run the art car space vehicle fleet to
explore and bring back new life forms to study.

I believe this will serve as a great theme because of an open approach to what Decom will be. Location
as yet undetermined, we will be able to plug this theme into any venue we find. I intend to work with all
the people named on this list to allow everyone to have a strong input into decom. A goal of recycling
many of the art pieces the community has and push people to make more to compliment what we
already have. I would like to work closely with the Art fund to showcase the pieces that are being
supported and give more people a chance to get excited about “what I want to do next time”

I believe in economic responsibility to take what we have and make it bigger. I’m thrilled with the ability
of the community to provide funding to artists and want to continue this aspect of decom. I want to
make decom spend less and support more.
My priorities would be set as:

1	Location: tech scout private and county property to find a venue that can be utilized for years to
come. Deadline August 20th

2	Art and theme: set a theme to decom that will be a departure from the political saturation we will be
dealing with 2008 (mars)

3	Budget: provide an economic plan for decom that will continue the funding of art in the community.

4	Unity: work tirelessly with volunteers and artists to make decom the best and biggest Burner event of
the year outside the man itself.
Thank you for your time and I wish I could be there. And thank you again for including me on this great
short list.
box trailer rental recommendations?

I'm bringing a surrey out to the playa this year, and I need to figure out how I'm gonna get it there. It's not that heavy but it is bulky - about 9 feet long. I'm looking to rent a trailer, and I would much prefer a box trailer over an open trailer, that way we could have some nice on-playa storage space where we can stash away extra coolers, water jugs, wardrobe, etc, etc. (The tow vehicle is a Dodge Van with a Class IV hitch).

Looks like U-Haul wants $29/day for a 5 x 10 or 6 x 12 box trailer. I'll probably have it for 2.5, maybe 3 weeks, so that thirty bucks a day is gonna add up. And besides, we all know how wonderfully burner-friendly U-Haul is.

Was wondering if anyone else had a better recommendation for a trailer rental. Or maybe someone here knows someone who has a 10 footish box trailer they'd rent me...

we need a town hall to discuss at the very least a couple things that I can think of:

Decom - it's seriously in danger of falling over from lack of attention. we can't pull it off in a month like we always seem to without burning out our people. Inspector Gadget is NOT going to be our fearless and foolish leader for decom. we don't have a site, we don't have a plan.
nor did we get the number of volunteers willing to take lead rolls like we hoped the last time we made this call.

Art Grants - we got a committee together. they figured out a bunch of things and they want to share what they are going to be running for us.

if you have anything else, please forward it to me and I'll put it on the agenda for the town hall

now the When?
I propose June 22nd. we have an offer to use Gadget's place. I suggest we take it. I also propose 1pm. yes yes I know it alma. however there is pretty much something going every weekend and we'll collide with something.

any one seriously disagree?

So I've been buying materials for my project and packages are starting to arrive, including the one that came today. Unfortunately on this one, I mis-clicked. I meant to buy LED rope light but I accidentally bought conventional (incandescent) rope light instead. Going back and looking at the website and the invoice, this really was my error, not theirs. Dang, no wonder that price seemed awfully low. My project will be driving a lot of rope light yet needs to run off batteries, so current consumption is going to be a big issue for me. I just can't use this stuff.

I was gonna put it up on eBay to see what happens, but then I figured I'd check here first to see if anyone here was looking to buy a shitload of 12v rope light. Here are the particulars:

This is a 150 foot spool of 12 volt 3/8" blue incandescent rope light. Draws 2.5 watts per foot (~200 ma @ 12 volts). One bulb per inch, cuttable about every four inches. The documentation says the maximum length is 30 feet, but the PVC jacket says the max run is 150 feet. So that's a little mystery. The link to the item on the vendors website appears below.

I paid $101 including shipping. I dunno, anyone wanna give me $75 for this stuff?

Can anyone help Sparky get elected this Saturday? (sorry) Wed, May 28, 2008 - 5:57 PM
Hello to all of my friends and supporters! Well, the election is less than one week away and I am very excited. We have accomplished a lot during this election. We have steered the dialog of the candidates to a more sustainable and green platform. We have set the example that a campaign does not need to take money from unions and developers to be a serious threat to all competitors. Finally, we have shown that a grassroots campaign can accomplish anything if there is enough support behind it.

Support is what I am asking each and everyone of you for the rest of this week up to election day. I need your support, you are the power that makes me who I am. I need each and everyone of you to e-mail at least ten people you know in the district, or even in the city and tell them that I am running for San Diego City Council District 3. Please tell them that I am experienced, honest, and have my neighborhoods priorities ahead of my own. Please tell them that I am not owned by anyone, and that I will set the example for the next person who wants to lead our District. If each and everyone of you reach out and tell ten more people, we will win this election because you are the greatest people in San Diego!

Finally, I need some on the ground help this Saturday at a couple of places. I am going to be in the Grape Street Park on Saturday at 10:00am holding a little pep rally among the dog owners and park users. I need people to come by and show that I am not alone. We will have signs for everyone to hold and you never know who will be there. This event should not last more than an hour and we will probably have a lot of fun doing it. At 1:00pm, I will be at the North Park Recreation Center. The North Park Recreation Center is located at 4044 Idaho Street in North Park. We will be at the corner of Howard and Idaho Street waving signs and stirring the people up. I have a couple of hundred business cards to leave on voter’s front doors. If I can get ten people to help me, this will take less than an hour and you will be one of my big “contributors”! After the cards are gone, we are done for the day, I was thinking about finding some place to have a libation and some good conversation with the volunteers afterward. I am sure that we can find a place that can accommodate us in the general area of the NPRC.

On election day (Tuesday 6/3/8), several of my staff and I will be on some of the busy street corners in the district waving signs and letting the people know that it is time to VOTE! We have a limited amount of poster board but we can use a few addition sign wavers. If you are interested or just want to drink a beer, please come to our election committee meeting on Friday, 5/30/8 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be at my house, located at 2075 Montclair Street San Diego, Ca. 92104. If you have any problems finding the place, please call me at (619) 284-2331.

I really want to thank all of you who have made my run for office possible. I may be running for office for you, but you are the people who have made it possible.

Okay some a while back Yona suggested something
about how maybe people (who like to garden) could
work together, plant different crops in backyard planters,
greenhouses, etc.... and share fruits and veges from our
own backyards. As we pay more and more for food, not
to mention organic produce, this idea sounds more
intriguing.

Right now I'd like to find out who is even interested in this.

I realize it is something that would take some time to put
together. We already have a bunch of tomato plants just
about ready to produce, plus cucumbers coming and corn
and some spinach almost ready.

Maybe we could make our own tribe and discuss this further.

Any interest?

Greetings our friends,

It is time to dispel all the rumors and get our creative forces moving, yet again, in a one of a kind adventure. It is with pleasure that we present to you- Elysium Midsummer Festival 08.

This year, our minds wondered even further, reinforcing the notion that evolution and change are the primary mechanisms that drive our creativity.

We have long struggled with the challenge of how to best support the music, the art, the projects, and the people that contribute so much to the enrichment of our lives. Whether that broadening of life experience happens at an event such as Burning Man or in a corner coffee shop, there are artists, entertainers, musicians and others that dedicate themselves fully to their craft and positively affect the human condition. Generally, these souls are humble in their ways and never ask for more than the appreciation and acknowledgement of their efforts. It is in this humility that our Elysium was born.
As we continue with our Philosophy from last year- to reward all artists, yet another focus is added. The true soul of our every event, our biggest supporter and inspiration- our community. We encourage you to meet thy neighbor. This year, take extra time to look a passerby in the eyes and smile, hug your friends, send an air kiss to a stranger, don't be afraid to open yourself to new people, possibilities, and ideas.

Elysium Festival provides an atmosphere, mindfully created with intent to be conducive to our Philosophy that encourages the development and strengthening of long term relationship. We do this by setting the stage for face to face interaction, governed by sentiments of trust, co-operation, altruism and playful engagement.

Come celebrate with us, the weekend of July 11,12, and 13, our diverse community and creativity that it inspires!

The event will be held at the same location- La Jolla Indian Reservation:

http://www.lajollaindians.com/Campground/

Our Website and ticket sales will become active on Wednesday, May 28th, 2008. In order to provide you with the best vibe that suits our mission statement, ticket sales will be limited to 400. In trying to set the best standard, ticket price will be $85.00 plus PayPal fees. RV parking tickets will be sold separately for $50.00 with only 15 spaces available. We strongly encourage you to conserve natural resources and physical space at the location for campers by, car pooling to the event.

So I hope few are offended that I am posting only now. But this is a topic that's pretty dear to me and to many SD & OC burners I know who have joined us in the past at San Onofre Beach. Please read through for background if you'd like, but there are two action items which you can take to help fend off another erosion of freedom:

1. Write or email or call the Director of Parks and Recreation to let her know you believe San Onofre should stay clothing optional. See the info below under 1. CONTACT THE DIRECTOR

2. Go to the beach this Saturday and join in a demonstration to keep the beach clothing optional. See the info below under 2. ATTEND A RALLY AT SAN ONOFRE BEACH ON SATURDAY, MAY 24

San Onofre has been our sanctuary and foremost place of recreation for 25 years. I know that many of you know how beautiful it is and how unique it is amongst southern California beaches in serving both the LA and SD areas with a clothing optional oasis.
DATE: May 21, 2008
SUBJECT: California: San Onofre State Beach
TO: Naturists and other concerned citizens

Dear Naturist,

This is an Action Alert from the Naturist Action Committee. NAC is asking for your immediate help in responding to a serious threat in the state of California.

NAC has learned that Ruth Coleman, Director of California's Department of Parks and Recreation, has abruptly revoked the application of the Department's Cahill Policy, as it applies to clothing-optional portions of San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County. Rangers have been told to begin "educating" beachgoers, starting June 1. The issuing of citations for nudity in the traditional clothing-optional area is to follow after 30 days.

IMPORTANT: NAC ASKS YOU TO CONTACT THE CA PARKS DIRECTOR

NAC urgently requests that you contact the Director of CA Parks to express your vigorous opposition to this disastrous change in policy. Detailed contact information is included below. However, so that your contact with the Director's office will have the greatest impact, please first take a couple of moments to learn about this situation.

THE CAHILL POLICY

Since 1979, the California Department of Parks and Recreation has operated under a policy put in place by then-DPR Director Russ Cahill. The policy came in the form of a memo issued to senior staff, explaining Cahill's decision not to designate clothing-optional areas in state parks. It also directed that citations for nudity in state parks would only be issued following a complaint and a failure to comply after a subsequent warning.

The policy has been in continuous effect since it was issued. It figured prominently in an important court case (California v. Bost) and was reaffirmed by CA Parks Deputy Director Jack Harrison in 1988.

Details of the Cahill memo, the Bost case and the Harrison letter are included on the NAC Web site, along with the text of California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Section 4322, which is the authority under which the Director proposes citing those who are nude at San Onofre.

WHY THE CHANGE NOW?

Naturists are always alert to the negative effect that illicit sexual activity can have on clothing-optional beaches. The regulars at many clothing-optional areas are quite effective at educating and discouraging those who would endanger the beach through sexual activities. At San Onofre, the problem has been diminished greatly in recent years, due in large part to those who really care about continued clothing-optional use of the beach.

The traditional clothing-optional beach at San Onofre is adjacent to Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps training base. Although those who wander onto the military base are subject to arrest for trespass, the area is lightly patrolled. For those who seek sex in the open, the military beach has become the site of choice, and the razor wire field fencing at the property line has proved to be no obstacle. Naturists have shown reluctance to pursue the scofflaws onto the military base, and State Park Rangers have no authority there.

Recent retirements among those in the CA Parks management team responsible for San Onofre have brought replacements who are intolerant of clothing-optional recreation. Instead of encouraging and allowing the cooperation of naturists in policing illicit activity, Rich Haydon, the new manager who took over at the beginning of this month, has featured the nearby sexual activity in his reports, using it as an excuse to request permission to put an end to recreational nudity at the beach. Haydon has reportedly represented to his superiors that a majority of those who come to enjoy the clothing-optional beach are participants in illicit sex there.

The response from CA Parks headquarters in Sacramento was the revocation of the Cahill Policy as it applies to San Onofre. The Department is reportedly seeking to insulate itself from sexual harassment claims by park employees who have complained recently of a "sexually-charged atmosphere." That sort of complaint is customarily reserved for employer-employee or co-employee interaction, and it inappropriately ignores the fact that State Park rangers are peace officers with a duty to arrest those who engage in illicit activities.

IS IT ONLY SAN ONOFRE?

At the present time, only San Onofre State Beach is affected by this change in policy. The real possibility that the same thing may happen at other California state parks is, of course, an ominous specter.

WHAT IS NAC DOING?

The Naturist Action Committee recognizes the severity of this situation and has taken quick action.

1) NAC has submitted to CA Parks a formal request for an administrative stay on implementation of this abrupt change in policy.

2) NAC has made Public Records requests for documents pertaining to this situation and the administrative action surrounding it.

3) NAC is retaining a lobbyist to assist and advise it in the often-difficult area of regulatory procedure.

4) NAC has retained legal representation and has begun the process that may ultimately result in civil action against the State of California and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

5) From the onset of this situation, NAC has been working closely with Friends of San Onofre Beach, the local user group. NAC and FOSOB will be meeting with CA Parks officials this week on this matter.

WHAT IS NAC ASKING YOU TO DO?

The Naturist Action Committee is asking you to contact the Director of CA Parks to express your concern and outrage over this turn of events. NAC is also asking you to attend a rally at San Onofre this coming Saturday.

1. CONTACT THE DIRECTOR

NAC is requesting ALL NATURISTS and other concerned individuals to contact the Director of Parks and Recreation, regardless of your place of residence. California understands the importance of out-of-state visitors who come to enjoy the state's beaches, lakes and streams. The change in policy applies to those visitors, as well as to California residents. While all are encouraged to make their voices heard, the participation of Californians is, of course, particularly important.

Send a letter, a fax or an e-mail, or make a phone call.

Director Ruth Coleman
Dept. of Parks and Recreation
1416 Ninth Street,
Sacramento, CA 95816

E-MAIL: director@parks.ca.gov
DIRECTOR'S OFFICE TELEPHONE: (916) 653-8380
DIRECTOR'S OFFICE FAX: (916) 657-3903

NAC encourages you to send copies of your faxes and paper mail to:
NAC, P.O. Box 132, Oshkosh, WI 54903.
Send copies of your e-mails to:
sanonofre@naturistaction.org

When you write or call:

a) Be polite. You have a right to be outraged, but you will achieve nothing positive by name-calling or rudeness.

b) Be known. Give your name and address. If you are a California resident or a frequent visitor to California, point that out.

c) Be focused. Keep your call or your correspondence brief and on target.

d) Be clear. Say that you OPPOSE the revocation of the Cahill Policy at San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.

Additional talking / writing points:

a) The precipitous change to public policy was done without public input. That's not an acceptable way to administer public resources.

b) The so-called "solution" does not address the real problem.

c) A recent public opinion poll (the 2006 NEF/Roper Poll, commissioned by the Naturist Education Foundation and conducted by the Roper polling organization) shows that a majority of Americans favor the setting aside of public lands for clothing-optional recreation.

d) In that same poll, an impressive 74 percent of Americans believe that people who enjoy nude sunbathing should be able to do so without interference from local officials as long as they do so at a beach that is accepted for that purpose.

e) Rangers and park managers must NOT confuse simple nudity with lewd behavior. Rangers presently have the authority to stop lewd activity, and that authority does not require the abrupt discontinuation of a long-standing policy that has worked well for years and years.

2. ATTEND A RALLY AT SAN ONOFRE BEACH ON SATURDAY, MAY 24

In close cooperation with Friends of San Onofre, NAC urges you to attend a rally at the beach on Saturday, May 24, 2008. Bring your own handmade signs to carry, if you wish. NAC will be providing a number of "Nude Beaches YES!" signs for participants.

This is an important event for those who are outraged at the Director's action and who believe San Onofre Beach is worth saving! If you're close enough to make it, please show up around 10 AM. Parking is limited.

MORE INFORMATION AND RESOURCES

Additional information and links are available, along with this NAC Action Alert on the web site of the Naturist Action Committee.

Select "Alerts" and find this NAC Action Alert under Current Alerts.

PLEASE HELP NAC TO CONTINUE HELPING NATURISTS!

The Naturist Action Committee is the volunteer nonprofit political adjunct to The Naturist Society. NAC exists to advance and protect the rights and interests of naturists throughout North America. Fighting for the clothing-optional recreational use of public land is expensive. To do its job, NAC relies entirely on the voluntary generosity of supporters like you.
